also known as: Afamelanotide, CUV1647, Scenesse
Half-life: ~1 hour (implant form: weeks)
Melanotan 1 (MT-1 / Afamelanotide) is a synthetic analog of α-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone) that stimulates melanin production in the skin. Unlike MT-2, it has minimal central nervous system activity, making it safer with fewer sexual side effects. It is FDA-approved (as Scenesse) for erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP).
Mechanism of Action
Binds melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) on melanocytes, stimulating the production of eumelanin (dark/brown melanin) and providing UV protection through increased pigmentation. Also has anti-inflammatory effects via MC3R and MC4R.
Approved by EMA (2014) as Scenesse for prevention of phototoxicity in adults with EPP. Clinically proven for photoprotection in that population.
GHK-Cu provides skin collagen support alongside MT-1's melanin production for comprehensive skin health.
MT-2 has all the effects of MT-1 plus sexual/appetite effects — they target the same melanocortin receptors and should not be combined.
